Grade 2 teachers during one of the training sessions
Project RISE has recently concluded its intensive training program for Grade 2 teachers, marking another important step in strengthening early literacy education. This milestone builds on the success of the previous year, when Grade 1 teachers from Project RISE partner schools embraced the challenge of nurturing young readers with dedication and care. As Grade 1 learners progress, Grade 2 teachers step in—ready to meet them where they are, build on the skills already developed, and guide them toward deeper comprehension and fluency. The work continues, along with the promise of sustained support for every learner.
On November 15, 2025, in partnership with DepEd Iligan, Project RISE officially launched the program titled “Enhancing Early Literacy: A Training on Reading Pedagogy and Instructional Materials Development for Grade 2 Teachers.” The initiative brought together educators from ten partner schools and marked a significant milestone in strengthening literacy practices for Grade 2 instruction. Grounded in research, collaboration, and a shared commitment to learners, the program reflects a unified vision for quality education. The 12-session capacity-building program was designed to deepen teachers’ understanding of core reading subdomains while equipping them with evidence-informed strategies applicable in real classroom settings. Each session supported participants not only as educators but also as reflective practitioners shaping meaningful learning experiences. Foundational literacy theories were translated into practice through hands-on workshops, collaborative discussions, and guided lesson planning aligned with the K–12 Grade 2 English Curriculum. Teachers engaged in reflective dialogue, co-designed lesson plans, and developed instructional materials tailored to the diverse needs of their learners.
A key highlight was the conduct of teaching demonstrations at Iligan City North Central School, where teachers applied their newly acquired strategies in actual classroom settings. This allowed them to validate and refine their approaches with learners, reinforcing the critical connection between theory and practice. At its core, the program aimed to enhance the literacy instruction skills of Grade 2 teachers. It strengthened their command of modern reading pedagogies and their capacity to develop contextualized instructional materials that respond to learners’ needs. More importantly, the initiative contributes to building a sustainable framework for early literacy. By empowering educators to lead high-quality reading interventions, Project RISE helps ensure that incoming Grade 2 students receive consistent and effective support—strengthening their foundational skills and fostering a lifelong reading journey.
