The RISE Action Research Workshop was successfully held from May 26 to 28, 2025, at MSU-IIT IDS Hinaplanon Campus. The three-day event provided an insightful and engaging experience for teachers in Grades 1 to 3 from Iligan City, many of whom were new to the field of action research.
The workshop began with a thought-provoking session by Dr. Allan B. De Guzman, a research professor from the University of Santo Tomas. His discussion effectively distinguished between conventional research and action research, emphasizing that the latter is rooted in developing innovative solutions to real-world classroom problems. He introduced the essential components of action research, including the Area of Focus, Study Variables, Research Questions, Intervention/Innovation, Membership of the Action Research, Negotiation to be Undertaken, Data Collection, Data Analysis and Interpretation, Findings, and Action Planning. This foundational input provided participants with the necessary framework and understanding to begin writing their own action research proposals.
Following this, participants engaged in a hands-on writeshop. With the support of the RISE Team and five faculty members from the Department of Professional Education of the College of Education, teachers identified current challenges in their classrooms and began formulating action research projects aimed at addressing them. The mentoring process helped guide participants in aligning their proposed innovations with the insights they had gained during the initial lecture.
The final part of the workshop was dedicated to presenting the participants' outputs. Ten teachers representing ten different schools shared their research proposals, each addressing unique and relevant classroom issues. One standout example was a project proposing the use of personalized reading booklets to improve phonemic awareness among Grade 1 learners. This highlighted the workshop’s core objective of encouraging practical, innovative strategies for improving student learning outcomes. The workshop concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants in recognition of their active participation and commitment. Overall, the event significantly enhanced the participants’ understanding of action research and equipped them with the skills to implement meaningful interventions in their teaching practice.
