Grade 1 teachers and RISE team with the compiled resources of the training
The training for Grade 1 teachers, entitled "Enhancing Early Literacy: A Training on Reading Pedagogy and Instructional Materials Development for Grade 1 Teachers," officially commenced on January 11, 2025. This comprehensive 12-part training workshop is specifically designed for selected Grade 1 teachers from partner schools. A cohort of ten teachers is participating in this rigorous professional development program, which aims to deepen their understanding of critical reading and literacy subdomains while introducing research-based strategies to enhance classroom instruction and the creation of high-quality instructional materials.
The first few sessions of the training focused on foundational literacy skills essential for early learners, including phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, text analysis, and writing. The participants also engaged in discussions about intervention strategies for supporting at-risk children, and the integration of 21st-century literacies—such as multiculturalism, gender equality, and environmental stewardship—into reading instruction. In addition, the importance of developing effective instructional materials to promote reading proficiency was emphasized, ensuring that teachers are well-equipped to foster a rich learning environment.
These initial sessions combined both theoretical insights and practical activities, encouraging teachers to reflect on their classroom experiences while building upon their existing knowledge. A key highlight was the introduction of a four-pronged, literature-based teaching strategy, which aligns with the competencies of the Department of Education's Matatag Curriculum. This approach serves as a solid foundation for developing lesson plans and instructional materials tailored to meet the diverse needs of Grade 1 students.
As the training progresses, the teachers will continue to focus on creating innovative lesson plans and instructional resources. This initiative marks the beginning of a larger effort to empower teachers and prepare them for the implementation of these strategies in the upcoming school year. The ultimate goal is to enhance early literacy development and equip Grade 1 educators with the skills necessary to support their students' growth and success in reading and beyond.
